Chapter Meetings
As the Fall season approaches and plans are being made for your chapter
meetings, please remember that the SVU Chapters Guidelines prohibit
scheduling a meeting either 30 days before or 30 days after any SVU
Interpretation Course held in the your geographical region, as well
as 30 days before or 30 days after the SVU 2009 Annual Conference in
Denver, June 11-13, 2009. Chapter Presidents or Program Directors please
notify SVU of your meetings as soon as you know the date so conflicts
can be avoided. Upcoming events, such as Interpretation Courses, are
posted in the e-Spectrum newsletter or on the SVU website home page
for your convenience. Chapters can announce their local meetings/events
in the e-Spectrum by contacting Margaret “Koko” Park at
parkm@ccf.org or Jeanette Flannery at jeflannery@sbhcs.com. In this
way technologists who may not be members can learn of your chapter and
the great opportunities that are available to them thru involvement
in a chapter. We would also like to hear from you regarding the success
of your meeting.
If you are interested in forming or joining a chapter, please contact
Koko or Jeanette. We will be happy to offer any assistance. Chapters
are an integral part of SVU. When a technologist is a member of a chapter
the opportunity for education, support, mentoring, problem solving,
and networking is without boundaries.
Chapter Profile
Congratulations to the Northwest Vascular Technologists (NWVT) chapter,
recipient of the 2008 Chapter of the Year Award at the SVU Annual Conference
in San Diego. This is the first time they have received the award. Keep
up the great work.
Northwest Vascular Technologists chapter
By David Olsen – President
In the 1980’s a small group of vascular technologists came together
and in the interest of continuing education formed a group known as
Northwest Vascular Technologists. The group was small, 10-20 members
at an annual meeting. This chapter has continually grown to a membership
of 100-130 for many years. The “next generation” of NWVT
chapter members has seen significant growth in the last few years to
a membership of 300 strong.
Many factors have contributed to this growth such as making the membership
free and creating a frequently updated website including online registration
for our meetings. E-mail has also played a part in keeping our members
informed of upcoming events, government relations, and updated information
regarding the field of vascular technology. In addition, we have reached
out to the vascular community and members allowing free job postings
and we advertise and support all vascular events. NWVT has really tried
to focus on our students. In 2005 we hosted the NWVT Annual Conference
at the Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT) in Klamath Falls, Oregon.
This was a venue to provide students a chance to get involved and excited
about vascular technology.
Lastly, a Board of Directors has been established which is composed
of physicians and technologists. This helps to guide and support our
Chapter in preparation for our annual meeting. I honestly feel that
establishing a Board of Directors has been the key to our success. The
continuity that the Board provides is a great help to our officers who
take over each year. In this way, we aren’t constantly “reinventing
the wheel”. Their guidance is what keeps our group motivated and
moving forward.
All things aside, we have incredible energy and support for our chapter.
A special thanks to the NWVT officers who donate their time to keep
our chapter growing and strong.
Looking Forward
The University of Cincinnati Vascular Surgery Division is offering
a 1½ day course on Abdominal Vascular Diagnostics with Duplex Ultrasound.
The meeting will be held at the Marriott Kingsgate Conference Center
in Cincinnati, OH, Friday, August 22 and Saturday, August 23. A total
of 10.25 SVU Continuing Medical Education Credits are being offered
for this course. A distinguished faculty will supply information and
hands-on instruction to improve the technologist’s ability in
this very challenging area of vascular ultrasound. Enrollment will be
limited to provide significant hands-on skills training. The course
brochure is available online at http://surgery.uc.edu/Divisons/Vascular/Vascular%20Main.html.
