The Society for Vascular Ultrasound (SVU)
presented the following awards at the SVU Annual Conference during the
2008 Vascular Annual Meeting, June 5-7, 2008 in San Diego, CA.
SCIENTIFIC AWARDS
The Alex Chao, MD, Young Investigator's Award for excellence in a scientific
research paper in vascular technology was presented to John
C. Wang, MD,Section of Vascular Surgery, Temple University
Hospital, Philadelphia, PA, for his paper on "Technical Aspects
of Duplex Ultrasound-Guided Angioplasty of Arteriovenous Fistulae."
First presented in 2004, this SVU award is named in honor of Dr. Alex
Chao, a vascular surgeon who died suddenly in 2003 at the age of 37
of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) acquired from a patient
he had treated in Singapore. The Dr. Alex Chao Award was sponsored for
a fifth year by Philips Healthcare in Bothell, WA.
POSTER AWARD
The recipient of the 2008 Excellence in Case Study Poster Presentation
is Kari Olmsted, RVT of the D.E. Strandness
Vascular Laboratory at the University of Washington Medical Center,
for her poster on "Iliac Endofibrosis in Athletes: A Case Study",
which was done along with Watson Smith, RDMS, RVT, and R. Eugene
Zierler, MD. DataStar sponsored this award.
ORAL CLINICAL PRESENTATION AWARD
There was a tie for the Oral Clinical Presentation Award between Joseph
P. Hughes, RVT RVS FSVU, et al of Navix Diagnostix, Inc.,
Taunton, MA, and Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx, NY., for his presentation
on "Risk Focused Screening for Vascular Disease: One University
Hospital's Experience", and R. Patrick DeMuth,
ThM RVT of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical
Center, Dallas, TX, for his presentation on "Hypo-Acoustic
Luminal Outline (HALO) Sign: An Adjunct Diagnostic Ultrasound Feature
of Late Graft Infection”. Navix Diagnostix, Inc. sponsored
this award.
PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
The recipient of the 2008 Professional Achievement Award is Ann
Marie Kupinski, PhD, RVT, FSVU of Clifton Park, NY, in
recognition of her lifetime of contributions to SVU and the vascular
ultrasound profession as a former SVU Journal Editor, educator, lecturer
and presenter. Surgisys and Midwest Ultrasound sponsored this award.
SVU LEADERSHIP AWARD
The 2008 SVU Leadership Award was presented to Melissa A.
Vickery, LPN-B, RVT, FSVU, of Richmond, VA, in recognition
of her dedicated work as SVU President (2006-2007) and other Board of
Directors service for 10 years.
DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
A 2008 Distinguished Service Award was presented to Anne
Jones, RN, BSN, RVT, RDMS, FSVU of Severna Park, MD, for
her long term commitment to SVU and her excellent volunteer advocacy
work and quality initiatives for the vascular profession.
CHAPTER AWARDS
The following three 2008 Chapter Awards were presented:
- 2008 Outstanding Affiliated Chapter Individual Recognition Award
was presented to Angela M. Jagan, RN, RVT,
in recognition of her outstanding long-term work for the Northern
Ohio Vascular Association (NOVA).
- A 2008 SVU Affiliated Chapter Recognition Award was presented to
the Northwest Vascular Technologists (NWVT)
in recognition of being an Outstanding SVU Affiliated Chapter in 2008.
David Olsen is NWVT President.
- A 2008 SVU Affiliated Chapter Recognition Award was presented to
the Northern Ohio Vascular Association (NOVA) in
recognition of being an Outstanding SVU Affiliated Chapter in 2008.
Margaret "Koko" Park, RVT, RDCS, FACS is NOVA President.
FOUR NEW SVU FELLOWS ANNOUNCED AT 2008 SVU ANNUAL CONFERENCE
Fellows Subcommittee Chair Debbie Pirt, RVT FSVU, announced the selection
of four new SVU Fellows for 2008. Fellows are SVU members recognized
for their many outstanding contributions to the Society as well as to
the vascular ultrasound profession. They are considered a unique resource
for the Society in terms on promoting the benefits of SVU membership
to others in the vascular ultrasound profession, and in supporting the
many other efforts of the Society.

The three technologist Directors elected to a three-year term (2009-2011)
